Для правильного инъецирования необходимо знать строение кожного покрова. Верхний слой кожного покрова состоит из эпидермиса, под которым располагается более толстый слой состоящий из размножающихся клеток. Кожный покров связан с мышцами комбинацией подкожного жира и волокнистой соединительной ткани. Для внутрикожных инъекций необходима очень тонкая игла, не длиннее 5 мм. Такие инъекции делают при тестировании на наличие туберкулёза. Слой жира плохо снабжается кровью и при попадании туда вакцина плохо впитывается. Чаще в таких случаях развиваются абсцессы. Так, подкожные инъекции делают в места, небогатые жиром.
